For all of human history stories have shaped how we see the world, truth or fiction, literal or poetic. We rely on stories to guide us. We are moved by them. Our thoughts and opinions are shaped by them.

Stories are built into our DNA. They tell of who we are and where we come from. Good stories tell a victory and triumph. Great stories tell a vulnerability, leaving no stone unturned.

Who among us has not felt the pain of another, or the relief of knowing that you're not the only one?

I'm Jennifer Peterkin, and this is the Human Experience, a platform that seeks to elevate stories, empower the storyteller, and invite the listener into a space of validation, understanding and compassion.

Throughout this podcast, you'll hear from people from all walks of life about how what they've lived through has shaped who they are. You'll hear stories of triumph and defeat of bravery and cowardice, of love and of loss. They will be silly and serious and everything in between.

The human experience is both the same and wildly different for everyone. It individualizes us, but it also has the power to bring us together.

Ignorance is the fuel that keeps the fires of hatred burning. We are creatures of comfort, of habit, and we don't always like to be pushed out of our comfort zone. But as much as it is in our nature to search for black and white in our world, it rarely exists.

Life happens in the gray.

Ultimately, when we strip away all of the noise, when we get to the human part of it, if we understand what someone has gone through or experienced to arrive at their current perspective, then maybe just maybe we can understand that differences don't necessarily mean divide.

Maybe by listening to each other's stories, we can stop thinking about people as groups or statistics, but as individuals, all equally wanting and deserving of love and dignity and compassion.

Maybe by listening to each other's stories, we realize that all people truly want is to be known and to be understood.

Maybe the human experience is what gets us out alive.
